This method borrows the logic of Pareto front analysis and multi-criteria dominance, adapted for practical decision use.
Let:
O = list of options [Option1, Option2, ..., OptionN]
C = list of criteria [Criterion1, Criterion2, ..., CriterionM]
Each option is described as a vector of values, one per criterion.
Example:
Option A = [Cost: 3, Speed: 8, Risk: 2]
Option B = [Cost: 4, Speed: 6, Risk: 2]
Option C = [Cost: 2, Speed: 9, Risk: 1]
Assume that:
For some criteria, higher is better (e.g., Speed)
For others, lower is better (e.g., Cost, Risk)
Standardize all scores so that higher always means better.
If CriterionX is “lower is better” (like Cost), transform score into:
Score = (max - actual value)
This allows all criteria to be directionally consistent for comparison.
Now each option becomes a point in an M-dimensional space, where “higher” is better on every axis.
We say:
Option A dominates Option B if A is better or equal in all criteria, and strictly better in at least one.
Check every pair of options:
Compare their vectors.
Eliminate any option that is dominated by another.
What remains is the non-dominated set—the “efficient frontier” of your decision space.
You can visualize this as shaving off weak limbs from a decision tree before climbing it.
Once you have the reduced set:
You may now apply personalized weights to the criteria if needed.
Use weighted sum scoring or multi-attribute utility models on the refined set only.
This reduces noise pollution from low-quality options skewing the scoring space.
You’re evaluating project management software:
Criteria:
Cost (lower is better)
Feature set (higher is better)
Learning curve (lower is better)
You invert scores so all are “higher is better.”
Options:
A = [Cost: 8, Features: 7, Learning: 6]
B = [Cost: 7, Features: 6, Learning: 4]
C = [Cost: 9, Features: 8, Learning: 7]
D = [Cost: 6, Features: 5, Learning: 3]
C dominates A, B, and D—it’s strictly better on all three dimensions.
A and B are dominated. D is worse on everything.
C survives. You now only need to evaluate C against future new entries.
